Harper Fund Award

In honor of SAMLA past president George Mills Harper, The Harper Fund was established to award graduate students with travel funds to attend the annual convention. Professor Harper’s academic career spanned over 50 years and he provided exceptional leadership and service to the Association. From his early years on the family farm in the Ozarks to his matriculation from Culver-Stockton College to UNC-Chapel Hill to his later chairmanship at Florida State University, Harper concentrated his writing and research efforts in Irish studies, particularly focusing on W. B. Yeats. In 1981, Dr. Harper received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin, in recognition for his critical work in studying Yeats and the occult.

SAMLA and The Harper Fund committee are eager to grant travel funds to graduate students who possess a keen interest in the humanities and are either presenting or planning to attend the annual convention. To apply for an honorarium, graduate students should complete the application, and send it via email to the SAMLA office c/o Lara Smith, Business Manager, at ljsmith@gsu.edu. Applications are also accepted via regular mail. Applications must be received by June 1st.

As a memorial fund for Dr. Harper, The Harper Fund accepts ongoing contributions. You may send them directly to the SAMLA office or direct questions to Lara Smith, the SAMLA Business Manager, at ljsmith@gsu.edu.
