- The executive committee is the governing body of SAMLA, made up of four officers, six representatives from the membership, the editor of South Atlantic Review and the executive director. The committee meets in the fall and spring each year.

- The nominating committee is chaired by the past president of SAMLA. The committee presents a slate of executive committee nominees annually to the membership.

- The finance committee, chaired by the first vice president of SAMLA, and joined by another board member and two representatives from the membership, provides support for preparation of the annual financial report and budget.

- The SAMLA Studies Award committee is responsible for the annual selection of an outstanding scholarly book publication by a SAMLA member.

- The SAR Prize committee reviews the issues from the year prior to the annual convention and selects one essay recognizing exceptional scholarship and contribution to the journal.

- The Greduate Student Essay Prize committee selects a graduate student paper from the prior year's convention recognizing excellence in scholarly presentation.

Honorary Members
- The honorary members committee evaluates the nominations of distinguished writers and scholars in order to provide recommendation of potential recipients to the executive committee and SAMLA membership for consideration and approval.

- The program committee is the body of SAMLA representatives working closely with the Atlanta office to plan and develop the convention program each year.

Harper Fund
- The Harper Fund committee reviews the applications for travel grants and distributes the funds to graduate students with a keen interest in the humanities for conference presentation.
